We just love real wood floors but want a more affordable alternative and don’t plan to be in this house forever. My husband will do the labor-any suggestions? I want something that is still very rich looking

Engineered wood flooring is the best, comes pre-finished, is easy for the do-it-yourselfer to install, and has a great warranty. You will have as many or more choices as with real wood and will not see the difference. It can even be installed below grade or in a concrete floor.

There are a ton of laminates out there – but really look around first because the quality varies greatly. The better ones are almost solid – the cheaper ones have a thin layer on top which WILL chip when you start banging it into place.

Stick with the prefinished real wood. The engineered wood floors are alright, but they aren’t any cheaper. The laminates look and sound like crap and the vinyls are just plain silly.
Go to a few flooring showrooms and ask to see their pre-finished wood floors and ask what they might have on special. You should be able to find something that you can buy for about $5.00/sq. ft. Any vinyl, laminate or engineered wood floor will run you just as much and won’t be nearly as nice.
Just my two bits.

do you have a flooring outlet near you? I have one called Big Bobs, they have laminate going for $ .79 a sq. ft. & hardwood for around $2.89 a sq. ft. I’d check the yellow pages to see if you have an outlet near you. Cheapest option.
